How is the AyrMesh Receiver different from the AyrMesh Hub?
- The AyrMesh Receiver uses the WiFi signal from an AyrMesh Hub to connect devices without WiFi capability to the network. It does not provide any WiFi signal of its own.
- The main part of the AyrMesh Receiver is a little wider but shorter than the Hub
- The AyrMesh Receiver has an integrated directional antenna, whereas the AyrMesh Hub has an external omnidirectional antenna.
How does the AyrMesh Receiver work?
The AyrMesh Receiver combines a powerful WiFi radio with an 8dB directional antenna. The user simply mounts the AyrMesh Receiver where it is in range of and pointed at the AyrMesh Hub. The AyrMesh Receiver’s power supply is plugged into the wall, and an Ethernet device can be plugged into the AyrMesh Receiver’s LAN port.
What devices work with the AyrMesh Receiver?
Just about any networking device that works with a normal Internet router. High-end IP cameras, printers, network-connected sensors, and network-attached controllers. The AyrMesh Receiver acts like a very long Ethernet cable between the AyrMesh Hub and whatever is plugged into the AyrMesh Receiver’s Ethernet port.
How do I use the AyrMesh Receiver to bring my network into a building?
All you have to do is initialize the Receiver (connect it to your router for a few minutes), mount it on top of or on the side of your building, facing your AyrMesh Hub, and plug a device into the “LAN” port on the Receiver’s power supply. That device will now be part of your network. You can also connect an Ethernet Switch to the LAN port of the Receiver’s power supply and plug multiple Ethernet cables into it, to place several devices on the network. Finally, you can take an old WiFi router, disable the “DHCP” function, plug one of the LAN ports into the LAN port of your Receiver, and configure the WiFi as an Access Point. See more details here.
How can I use the AyrMesh Receiver to connect an Ethernet-only device (like a high-end IP camera) to my network?
It’s very simple – easier than configuring a WiFi device. Just attach the Receiver to your router for a few minutes to initialize it, then mount it near your device facing your Hub. Plug the Receiver’s power supply into power, then attach your device to the Receiver’s LAN port. It will appear on your AyrMesh network.
Can the AyrMesh Receiver be used without an AyrMesh Hub?
No – the AyrMesh Receiver is designed to use the signal from the AyrMesh Hub and gets those settings automatically from AyrMesh.com when it goes through its “initialization” process.
Does the AyrMesh Receiver both receive and transmit data?
Yes, of course – data has to flow in both directions to sustain the network link. We chose the term “Receiver” to indicate that, unlike the Hub, it is a “client” device (using a WiFi network), not an Access Point (creating a WiFi network).
